The Brown Hope Board of Directors is a body of individuals who collectively assume legal and fiduciary responsibility for Brown Hope, a 501(c)3 nonprofit in Portland, Oregon. Brown Hope Board Members will serve a one year term to be eligible for re-appointment.
Board meetings will be held every other month, in addition to every other month committee meetings, and board members are expected to commit a minimum of 5 hours a month in volunteer service to the organization.
Each board member has specific duties to provide stewardship and governance to the organization as outlined by Brown Hope’s Bylaws.
Board member primary responsibilities:
- Regularly attend board meetings and provide appropriate notice for absences.
- Make an annual financial contribution to Brown Hope to the extent of your ability.
- Approve the annual budget and provide oversight over the organization’s financial management.
- Serve as a community ambassador on behalf of Brown Hope. Attend events and functions in the community and share your passion for Brown Hope with others.
- Define the position of the Chief Executive Officer in a formal job description and develop a plan to evaluate their role and performance.
- Engage in periodic evaluation of self and board performance and continue to pursue leadership development opportunities.
Board member qualifications:
- One or more years of nonprofit board experience.
- Be a culturally competent leader: eager to learn, open to diversity, a good listener, and capable of working well with people from different backgrounds and identities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral, written and listening communication.
- Be a cooperative and collaborative team member. Ability to communicate in a professional and respectful manner with all clients, co-workers, Board Members, stakeholders, community members, public officials, and other business partners.
- Integrity, credibility, and passion for supporting the communities Brown Hope serves.
Service on Brown Hope’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to board members’ duties.
